A framework for teaching local truths
Cara F. Ward, University of North Carolina, Wilmington
Abstract: The call to teach truth about hard history has led a social studies methods instructor to a deep examination of the 1898 coup and massacre with preservice teachers in Wilmington, North Carolina where the event took place. Valuable lessons for those teaching similar traumatic histories have emerged from this experience leading to a framework for teaching local truths.
