Preparing teacher candidates for teaching truth: A critical response to a field trip
Rhianna Thomas, New Mexico State University
Abstract: How can instructors help future educators develop the skills needed to teach truth in early childhood classrooms? In this self-study, I share the story of a university field trip to a local museum that became the impetus for a series of communications between my class and the museum director about accurate representation. Through the dual lenses of critical literacy and culturally sustaining pedagogy, I share recommendations for bolstering teacher candidate comfort with critical conversations and civic action that calls residents into loving community.
